The story so farThe Affordable Homes Bill was introduced in the House of Commons on 2 July 2014 by Andrew George (Liberal Democrat). It is now at committee stage in the House of Commons. At committee stage the bill is examined line by line and amendments can be made, before it returns for report stage.

What the bill does

<p>This Bill has two distinct aims:</p><ul><li>to introduce three new exemptions to the application of the under-occupation deduction from Housing Benefit (or the housing element of Universal Credit) for claimants who are deemed to be under-occupying their social rented homes</li><li>to secure a review of the availability of affordable and intermediate housing by the Secretary of State. On completion, a report of the review would be laid before Parliament.</li></ul>
