The story so farThe Transport for London Bill was introduced in the House of Lords on 28 November 2005. It completed its passage through Parliament and became law as the Transport for London Act 2008, receiving Royal Assent on 22 May 2008.

What the bill does

<p>Transport matters in London are devolved to Transport for London (TfL) under the Greater London Authority Act 1999. The Bill provides TfL with further powers related to its responsibilities for road user charging, London cabs and private hire vehicles, fare enforcement, street management and other miscellaneous matters. In particular, it: </p><ul><li>increases TfL's powers to fine and remove vehicles that fail to pay any road charges within London </li><li>implements a 'default' fare system for black cab journeys from London to a destination outside the boundary </li><li>permits fixed penalty notices to be issued for specified black cab and minicab offences.</li></ul><p>Further information can be found in the Explanatory Memorandum that accompanies the Bill.</p><p><a>Read the Explanatory Memorandum</a></p>
