The story so farThe Iraq War Inquiry (No. 2) Bill was introduced in the House of Commons on 20 March 2008 by Mr Edward Davey (Liberal Democrat). It is now at second reading in the House of Commons. Second reading is the first debate on the overall principle of the bill; if the bill clears it, detailed committee scrutiny follows.

What the bill does

<p>This Bill was presented by the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for foreign affairs, and supported by other front bench Liberal Democrats. It is designed to establish an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the invasion of Iraq in 2003, using powers under the Inquiries Act 2005. Since 2003, there have been a number of campaigns to establish an independent inquiry.<br><br>Key areas</p><ul><li>The Government would be responsible for appointing a panel of 12 members who would have powers to investigate</li><li>The inquiry would cover the origins, inception, legality and conduct of the hostilities </li><li>The inquiry would make its findings public. </li></ul>
