The story so farThe Saving Gateway Accounts Bill was introduced in the House of Commons on 4 December 2008 by Mr Alistair Darling (Labour). It completed its passage through Parliament and became law as the Saving Gateway Accounts Act, receiving Royal Assent on 2 July 2009.

What the bill does

This short Bill establishes a Government-subsidised savings scheme for people of working age on low incomes and in receipt of specified benefits. The scheme is voluntary and eligibility is on an individual basis. The Saving Gateway has been trialled in several regions of the UK; the Bill establishes a scheme for the whole country.<span><br></span>
