The story so farThe European Union Membership (Referendum) Bill was introduced in the House of Commons on 16 December 2009 by Mr Douglas Carswell (Conservative). It is now at second reading in the House of Commons. Second reading is the first debate on the overall principle of the bill; if the bill clears it, detailed committee scrutiny follows.

What the bill does

The Bill would require the Government to hold a referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union. It makes provision for the conduct and financing of the referendum and stipulates the question to be asked.
