BBC NORTHERN IRELAND

The motion

That this House deplores the proposed job losses among BBC staff in Northern Ireland, taking place as a result of privatisation, through market testing, in the resources area; notes that the redundancies will affect more than 33 per cent. of the workforce in that area and mean the loss of technical and creative skills which, once gone, may be impossible to replace; expresses concern that, with the recent history of terrorist infiltration of private security firms in the Province, the possible privatisation of security services within BBC Northern Ireland could threaten the personal security of those using BBC property; and is disturbed by evidence that, against their Charter commitment to regional broadcasting, the BBC intend to commission Southern Irish television companies to produce ú5 million worth of programmes using funds intended to boost production in Northern Ireland.
