SEPARATISTS AND THE QUEBEC REFERENDUM

That this House congratulates the people of Quebec on the magnificent turnout of voters in the referendum on the constitutional status of Quebec held on Monday 30th October; commends the thoroughly democratic manner in which the referendum debate was conducted; recognises that in exercising their rights as a sovereign people they have again chosen to remain within Canada, but deplores the statement of Jacques Parizeau, Premier of Quebec, that the decision arrived at by the Quebec people was achieved by money and the ethnic vote; and recalls that some 200,000 Quebecers are either Scottish born or of Scottish descent and play their full part in the life of their chosen homeland and that Jacques Parizeau has pandered to that darker side of nationalism which must always be defeated.
