Education in Newham

The motion

That this House notes that on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme on 15th May, the Right honourable Member for Norfolk South, the Secretary of State for Education and Science, suggested that until recently the responsibility for education in the London Borough of Newham had been that of the Inner London Education Authority; is appalled, but not surprised, that the Secretary of State should display such ignorance of the organisation of education in London; applauds the work of the Education Department of the London Borough of Newham over the last twenty five years, and its predecessors in the county boroughs of West and East Ham, in educating generations of Newham children despite the tight financial constraints of the last decade; and calls on the Secretary of State to ensure adequate resources for education within the Borough.
