VISIT OF THE PRESIDENT OF CYPRUS

The motion

That this House warmly welcomes the visit of the President of the Republic of Cyprus to Britain for talks with the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to give wholehearted support for the efforts of the Cyprus Government to bring about the reunification of the island under a new settlement allowing all Cypriots to live in peace and prosperity; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to exercise its duties as a guarantor power and as a fellow member of the Commonwealth to restore the sovereignty of the whole island under a federal constitution to guarantee the human rights of all the lawful inhabitants of the island; further calls upon Her Majesty's Government and the governments of the member states of the European Union to agree a timetable to start the formal process for the accession of Cyprus to membership of the Union; and believes that membership would be to the advantage of all Cypriots and to the benefit of the Union.
