The motion
That this House expresses its concern that Ken Saro-Wiwa the leader of the Ogoni people, is to stand trial before a military tribunal on Monday 16th January charged with inciting communal clashes, that the tribunal has the power to pass the death sentence, and that Ken Saro-Wiwa is categorised by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience and that Ken Saro-Wiwa is committed to non-violent protest; therefore calls for his case to be heard before a civil court; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to make the strongest possible representations to the Government of Nigeria on Ken Saro-Wiwa's behalf, and to ensure that its representatives attend the tribunal should it go ahead, and upon the Nigerian High Commissioner to make clear to his government the strength of feeling of members of all sides of this House concerning Mr Saro-Wiwa's case.
