PUBLIC BOYCOTT OF VEAL

Tabled by Mr John Home Robertson (Labour) 19 signatures

The motion

leave out from 'House' to end and insert 'endorses the ban on veal crates in the United Kingdom; urges other members of the European Union to impose a similar ban; submits that the export of live animals for rearing in crates or for slaughter is not acceptable on welfare grounds and that this export trade is not in the best interests of the British agricultural and food industries; calls on the Government and the Meat and Livestock Commission to promote the export of quality British meat produced on farms with high welfare standards prior to slaughter on properly regulated premises as close as possible to the farm; acknowledges the obvious distinction between humane veal production and the crate system; and warns people that an indiscriminate boycott of veal in Britain could lead to increased exports of calves or the slaughter of calves at birth.'.
