BANGLADESH ELECTIONS
Tabled by Peter Shore (Labour)

The motion
That this House expresses its deep anxiety and concern at the continued failure of the Government and the main politial parties in Bangladesh to reach agreement on the holding of free and fair elections; believes that the results of the poll on 15th February, boycotted by the main opposition parties, and held in an environment of violence and intimidation, cannot hope to confer legitimacy on the new Parliament: and calls upon both the Government and opposition parties to reopen negotiations to find an agreed formula for the holding of fresh elections which will be free and fair and whose results will reflect the wishes of the whole Bangladeshi people.
