That this House congratulates the CO-Gas Safety Society for increasing awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning from poorly serviced or malfunctioning gas appliances, solid fuel burners or unswept chimneys; notes that 63 people have died in the last 12 months of carbon monoxide poisoning with at least 403 other near fatalities; calls on the Department of Trade and Industry, the Health and Safety Executive, local authorities and fuel retailers to conduct a major public information campaign about ventilation and gas safety including television filler advertisements paid for from the profits of the privatised utilities; and asks general practitioners and those involved in medical training to be more alert to the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
