Return of Baltic States' Gold Reserves

Tabled by Sir Robin Maxwell-Hyslop (Conservative) 1 signatures

The motion

That this House acknowledges with shame that the Bank of England was forced by the Foreign Compensation Act 1969 to hand over to the Russian Government, and to convert to other uses, without the consent of the depositors, the national gold reserves of the independent republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to redeposit in the Bank of England to the order of any new independent governments that may emerge in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania gold of equal value, irrespective of whether Her Majesty's Government can recover it from its assignees pursuant to that Act.
