QUASHING OF MAHMOOD HUSSEIN MATTAN CONVICTION

Tabled by Mr Rhodri Morgan (Labour) 47 signatures

The motion

That this House welcomes the submitting of the 1952 Mahmood Mattan murder conviction to the Court of Appeal by the new Criminal Cases Review Commission as its first case; welcomes both the verdict of the Court to quash the conviction and the speed and firmness with which the Court reached its verdict; notes that Mr Mattan's widow Laura is now in failing health; but trusts that the verdict, although 46 years too late to save her husband and children's father from the gallows, will at least enable her to live out the rest of her life safe in the knowledge that the justice system has righted a grievous wrong to an innocent citizen of Cardiff.
