The motion
That this House calls upon the Nigerian Government to review the case of Safiyati Hussaini who was sentenced to death by stoning for the crime of adultery which was imposed by the Islamic court in the northern state of Sokoto last year; and notes that the lawyers acting on behalf of Safiya are seeking to overturn the sentence on the grounds that she was raped, and furthermore that the alleged act of adultery took place before the Sharia punishment of stoning was introduced in Sokoto, that Safiyati was not properly informed of the nature of the proceedings at her first trial and that she had not been provided with a lawyer at her first trial.
