The motion
That this House welcomes the Government's intention to publish an Energy White Paper; recognises that the near collapse of British Energy shows that nuclear power is uneconomic; notes that there is still no way of disposing of radioactive nuclear waste safely; acknowledges that future energy demands could be adequately met by renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar and wave power and biomass rather than nuclear; and urges the Government to agree to much higher reductions in carbon dioxide beyond the 2010 target and to develop a fiscal and regulatory framework that enables 30 per cent. of the UK's electricity to be generated from renewable energy sources by 2020.
