DEATHS OF CHILDREN IN PRISON

That this House deeply regrets the death of 16-year-old Gareth Price following an incident at Lancaster Farms Young Offenders Institution on 21st January; recognises with great concern that this is the 27th child death in prison since 1990; acknowledges that not one of these tragedies occurred in local authority secure units which are compliant with the Children Act 1989; and urges the Government to demonstrate that every child matters by undertaking a wholesale review of its policy towards the placement and care of children within the secure estate.
