OFFSHORE WINDFARMS IN SCOTTISH WATERS

Tabled by Mr Harold Best (Labour) 20 signatures

The motion

That this House welcomes the development of wind farms as a means of generating greener electrical energy; acknowledges that some of the best locations for such wind farms are off the beautiful north west coast of Scotland;notes that one such wind farm proposes to transmit energy via a sub-sea cable across the Minch to Ardmair Bay just north of Ullapool; regrets that this otherwise admirable and necessary concern for the greener generation of electrical energy would be marred by a proposal to construct miles of pylons across large areas of unbridled natural beauty; and therefore calls for accurate costing of sub-sea cabling and on-shore undergrounding to be carried out, despite this not meeting Ofgem's prerequisite of the cheapest route being the only route, because the use of pylons would mar the natural beauty of one of Scotland's and Great Britain's most precious green open spaces for many generations.
