FUNDING FOR THE AFRICAN UNION IN DARFUR

Tabled by Clare Short (Independent Labour) 68 signatures

The motion

That this House is increasingly concerned that, three years into the Darfur crisis, the humanitarian and security situation continues to deteriorate; notes with concern the recent warnings from the Secretary General of the United Nations, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Crisis Group that the African Union Mission in Darfur is not receiving sufficient funding; is concerned by the US Congress decision to withdraw $50 million in funding pledged to the African Union; notes that this constrains the African Union from fulfilling its mandate; and urges the UK Government both to put the issue before the Security Council and to lobby the European Union, US and other donors effectively so that this shortfall in funding can be met forthwith.
