SUPPORTING OLDER CARERS

Tabled by Mr Stephen O'Brien (Conservative) 131 signatures

The motion

That this House recognises the significant social and economic contributions made by older carers in looking after another family member or friend for 50 or more hours a week; notes that those of pension age cannot usually claim the carer's allowance and that the amount of care given by these hidden carers often relates to age, those aged 65 or over providing more hours of care; further notes that 44,000 older carers are aged 85 years and above; observes that this situation is likely to continue given the UK's ageing demography; welcomes initiatives to identify and assist older individuals taking on caring responsibilities; and therefore commends the work being undertaken by Independent Age, in partnership with Carers UK and the Princess Royal Trust for Carers, to identify these individuals and their needs, provide appropriate assistance and develop best practice guidance.
