The motion

That this House acknowledges the contribution of the six million carers in the United Kingdom who provide unpaid help and support to a frail, ill or disabled relative, friend or partner; welcomes Carers' Rights Day, which is being held on 8th December 2006, and its focus on ensuring that carers are aware of, and apply for, the benefits and other support to which they are entitled; believes that it is essential that carers are identified and given information about their rights to benefits and an assessment of their needs; recognises that information is key to giving carers' choices and control over their lives; welcomes initiatives to identify hidden carers and congratulates the 750 local groups holding events around the country; believes that all local authorities, health bodies, voluntary sector organisations and employers have a role to play in identifying and supporting carers; and calls upon all hon. Members to play their part by distributing information to carers in their constituencies.
