CLOSURE OF GE LIGHTING FACTORY IN LEICESTER

Tabled by Keith Vaz (Labour) 25 signatures

The motion

That this House regrets the announcement by GE Consumer & Industrial Digital Energy that the company plans to close the GE Lighting Factory in Leicester by the end of 2007; notes that the factory employs over 370 highly skilled and dedicated workers; recognises the importance of the factory to the city of Leicester and the 60 year operational history of the site; believes the decision to look to relocate workers to Eastern Europe is a short-sighted and callous decision; further notes the strategic locations and excellent transport links of the site as well as the talented workforce available; and calls on the company to assess properly alternative proposals with a view to keeping the site open.
