ARCHBISHOP'S POLICE STATE WARNING

The motion
That this House takes notes of the warning by Archbishop Dr John Sentamu, based on his experience in Uganda under Idi Amin, that detaining terror suspects for 90 days without charge or trial could make the UK `close to a police state'; supports Dr Sentamu's view that no new evidence has been presented by the Government to justify any increase in detention beyond the 28 days already agreed by the House on 9th November 2005, particularly as accused persons may be further questioned by police if significant new evidence emerges after they have been charged; and agrees that British traditions of freedom and due process should be cherished and defended.
