UNICAMERAL PARLIAMENT

That this House notes with great interest that following the Commons debate on Reform of the House of Lords on 6th and 7th March, 169 Labour hon. Members voted for a bicameral Parliament and 155 voted against, suggesting that almost half of Labour hon. Members favour a unicameral parliament; believes that this reflects a widely held view among Labour Party members, trade unionists and working people generally that the House of Lords should simply be abolished; is seriously concerned that the unicameral option was deliberately excluded from consideration by the Royal Commission on the Reform of the House of Lords and from the Labour Party internal debate; considers that the case for a unicameral parliament has not been properly considered nor answered; and believes therefore that the issue remains politically live and will be revisited in the foreseeable future.
