FAMAGUSTA

That this House welcomes the action of Mr Alexis Galanos, Mayor of Famagusta and the municipality of Famagusta to highlight the ongoing plight of the town, which after 33 years since the invasion of 1974, is still in great part deserted and neglected in spite of the very clear will of the former residents, both Greek and Turkish Cypriots, to see the town fully reopened and redeveloped for the benefit of its people; and calls on the UK Government to enter into discussions with Mr Galanos and with other interested parties to promote the full reopening of the town, to make it clear to Turkey and to the Turkish Cypriot administration in that their full co-operation is expected, and to work within the UN and the EU, of which organisations Cyprus is a member, to develop these proposals.
