FUNDING FOR YOUNG CARERS' ORGANISATIONS

Tabled by Ms Diane Abbott (Labour) 61 signatures

The motion

That this House recognises the fundamental contribution made by the estimated 175,000 young carers in the UK who are looking after parents and other family members; notes that these young people are often undertaking a large amount of household and medical-care work whilst they are still in education and that they may well be under a lot of pressure and stress as a result; further notes the importance of young carers' organisations, which give them valuable support, advice and time off; recognises that these organisations rely on funding from the Carers Grant and the Children's Fund, both of which are due to be halted next March; and calls on the Government to ensure that the £334 million funding which will be moved from the Carers Grant and the Children's Fund into councils' children budgets will be ring-fenced for the benefit of young carers.
