SAFE NEW NUCLEAR GENERATION IN WALES AND THE UK

That this House notes that safe nuclear generation has made a valuable contribution to the Welsh economy for over four decades; understands the need to dispose safely of existing nuclear waste; acknowledges that private operators of any new build nuclear power stations will have responsibility for decommissioning and waste issues; welcomes the Energy White Paper and consultation on nuclear energy; believes that the existing site at Wylfa on Anglesey, subject to the required criteria, should be considered because of the benefits to the local and Welsh economy; further notes that five out of six candidates in the recent Welsh Assembly election in Ynys Môn, including the successful candidate, the Leader of Plaid Cymru, pledged support for a new Wylfa B station; and believes that to fulfil security of supply and low carbon electricity generation in the future then new nuclear build is vital as part of a diverse energy mix for Wales and the rest of the United Kingdom.
