HUMAN RIGHTS AND HOMES FOR THE ELDERLY

Tabled by Mr Dai Davies (Independent) 51 signatures

The motion

That this House believes that the Human Rights Act 1998 should apply to fundamental rights of citizens, such as the right to a secure home; further believes that pensioners suffering from diseases of old age are particularly vulnerable, and are especially in need of having their living rights protected; believes the decision of the Law Lords on 20th June on the case of an 84 year old pensioner with Alzheimer's disease who was evicted from a private care home funded by her council was misguided and against the spirit of the Human Rights Act; and in the light of this perverse decision, calls on the Government to bring forward legislation to ensure that residents of private care homes have their human rights fully protected.
