BURMA AND INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS

That this House believes that Burma's military rulers are undermining the country's sovereignty, stability and peace, not the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as alleged by the Myanmar Women's Federation; is deeply concerned about the ICRC's findings, made public last week, that the military routinely abuses the civilian population and detainees, subjecting them to numerous acts of violence, including murder, particularly in eastern Burma along the Thai border where fighting continues with ethnic minority insurgents; is dismayed that the Burmese military regime has prevented the ICRC from visiting political prisoners since 2005 and has recently imposed further restrictions on its humanitarian work; and calls upon the international community, as a matter of urgency, to address the suffering of the Burmese people, and to secure the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, jailed parliamentarians, and other political prisoners.
