UK FISHING INDUSTRY

The motion

That this House supports the UK fishing industry; notes the economic benefits to the UK of having a fishing fleet; further notes that there are 12,000 people employed as fishermen and 14,000 employed in jobs which are dependent on UK fish catches; recognises the risks that fishermen take in the course of their time at sea; further recognises that since 1997 over 6,000 fishermen have lost their jobs; and calls upon the Government to support the UK fishing industry during its negotiations within the European Commission and other EU member states.
