ITALY AND THE RROMA POPULATION

The motion
That this House is troubled by the recent events in Italy concerning the Romanian Rroma population living there; notes that an emergency law was rushed into force stating that immigrants deemed to be a threat to public security may be summarily expelled from the country; further notes that since then 38 Romanians have been expelled and some politicians are calling for as many as 20,000 Rroma in Rome alone to be expelled; is concerned that these events have increased animosity towards the Romanian Rroma population in Italy and have already led to attacks on people from these communities; and calls on the UK Government to put pressure on the Italian government to honour their obligations under EU law only to expel immigrants who individually pose a threat to public security, to provide a right to appeal and to give a month in which to leave the country.
