EARLY READING PROGRAMME FOR CHILDREN
Tabled by Sir Alan Meale (Labour)

The motion
That this House notes that in the UK one in five children leaves primary school unable to read properly; commends the Channel 4 Lost for Words season of campaigning programmes aimed at getting young children reading early; believes that all children in mainstream schools are capable of learning to read and should be taught to do so for at least one hour per day until they can read unaided; and calls upon the Government to introduce whatever measures are necessary to achieve this simple but necessary aspiration.
