The motion
That this House supports the Downing Street petition for a combined high profile memorial for recipients of the George Cross and Victoria Cross; notes the cross-party support such a memorial has already received, as recorded on the related Facebook website; recalls the backing it has further gained from all ranks of service personnel, including a former Chief of Defence staff; believes that a more public monument would provide an iconic reminder of selfless action in an age desperately seeking role models; reflects upon the impact of the inspirational monuments in Washington DC such as the Korean War memorial; and suggests that one place worthy of consideration to honour society's heroes in both peace and war may be the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.
