FUEL CHARGES FOR PRE-PAYMENT METERS

Tabled by Austin Mitchell (Labour) 70 signatures

The motion

That this House, in view of the gross overcharging by energy companies of those poor and vulnerable consumers who pay by pre-payment meters, and the feeble response of Ofgem in asking the utility companies to reduce these charges by Christmas under threat of yet another inquiry if they do not, urges the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change to recognise that fuel charges have risen to record levels and that winter is coming by compelling energy suppliers to reduce their pre-payment charges to the same rates as those charged to consumers who pay by cheque or cash, in order urgently to end this gross exploitation of the poor and vulnerable.
