TALLOW AND BIODIESEL

That this House notes that tallow is one of a number of sources used in producing biodiesel; recognises that there is not a requirement to display the inclusion of tallow in the fuel at the point of sale; expresses concern that vegetarians, vegans and people who follow certain religions will feel that ethically they are unable to use this fuel and will not be able to identify when tallow has been used in the production of biodiesel; further notes that they will be limited as to what transport they feel comfortable to use; believes there to be no environmental advantages to using tallow as a biodiesel feedstock instead of plant oils; further notes that total availability of tallow as a source is limited and cannot be increased; and calls on the Government to ensure that biodiesel sold at UK fuel stations is produced only using virgin vegetable oils such as rapeseed and used cooking oils.
