POLAVARAM DAM

That this House notes with concern the displacement of over 200,000 people from the largely tribal communities and marginalised castes in Andhra Pradesh, southern India as a result of the proposed construction of the Indira Sagar Polavaram Dam; further notes with concern that if built the dam will submerge an area equivalent to the size of the Isle of Wight at 147 square miles; expresses concern that the environmental and social damage this will cause and the impact this will have on forests, wildlife sanctuaries and fertile agricultural land; and calls for the proposals to build the Polavaram Dam to be reconsidered with immediate effect.
