INTERNATIONAL SUBSIDIARIES OF TESCO AND TRADE UNION MEMBERSHIP

Tabled by Jon Cruddas (Labour) 1 signatures

The motion

That this House notes Tesco's public commitment to corporate responsibility and to respecting human and employment rights wherever it operates; further notes with concern the evidence, published by UNI Global Union, that in some of its international subsidiaries Tesco is breaching its own principles of fair treatment of employees and undermining their right freely to join and belong to trades unions; is dismayed that Tesco refuses even to meet with trades unions in the US to discuss representation, despite being urged to do so by Barack Obama; condemns Tesco for dismissing employees for their legitimate union activities in Thailand, South Korea and Turkey; and calls on Tesco to ensure that all of its subsidiaries operate in line with its stated principles of fair treatment of employees, respecting their human and employment rights, investigate the alleged breaches of employment and human rights in its subsidiaries, and appoint non-executive directors to its corporate responsibility committee to provide independent oversight of Tesco's policies and practices.
