The motion
That this House expresses profound concern that for the first time in history, more than one billion people, or nearly one in every six people are hungry; is further concerned that undernutrition continues to cause the unnecessary deaths of 3.1 million children every year and that infant deaths in the developing world may be between 200,000 and 400,000 higher per year on average between 2009 and 2015 as a result of the food and financial crises; deplores the failure of the international community to deliver on its commitments made at the first World Food Summit 13 years ago to halve the number of hungry people no later than 2015, and other pledges made at subsequent World Food summits; believes that the forthcoming World Food Summit in Rome, 16-18 November 2009, must lead to the immediate delivery of unfulfilled commitments, including funding pledges; urges the Government to provide the necessary leadership on hunger and undernutrition at the summit by ensuring that the plea of millions of undernourished children is recognised; and calls on the Government officially to endorse the proposal for the adoption by governments of voluntary National Declarations of Commitment to Eradication of Hunger and Malnutrition by 2025.
