BACK BENCH BUSINESS ON WEDNESDAYS

That this House welcomes the recommendation of the House of Commons Reform Committee chaired by the former hon. Member for Cannock Chase in its First Report of 2008-09 Rebuilding the House, HC 1117 that `we would like backbench business to be scheduled on Wednesdays'; notes the words of the former Prime Minister on 26 May 2009 in his Fixing Broken Politics speech that `it's time to strengthen Parliament' and of the Deputy Prime Minister in his New Politics speech on 19 May 2010 that `Parliament's power will also be strengthened as we bring forward the proposals of the Wright Committee'; and calls on the Government to bring forward proposals to change the Standing Orders of the House in order to implement the recommendation immediately.
