TRINITY MIRROR REDUNDANCIES

The motion

That this House supports quality journalism and UK media jobs and is shocked to learn that, despite commitments to the contrary in March 2009, the Trinity Mirror newspaper group has announced 200 redundancies, about a quarter of total staff across The Mirror, The Sunday Mirror and The People; has concerns about the lack of consultation and rushed timescale with little regard for the staff involved; opposes the excessive rewards given to Trinity Mirror Chief Executive Sly Bailey, who received a bonus of £671,000 on top of her £736,000 basic salary and pension contributions of £248,000 totalling £1.6 million; notes that the Chief Executive has already axed 1,700 jobs and was awarded this money in the context of a 41 per cent. reduction in company pre-tax profits; urges Trinity Mirror to explore every possible avenue to avoid further redundancies; and asks the employer to consult and negotiate with workforce representatives, including the National Union of Journalists.
