NEW SAFEGUARDS FOR INTERNET PRIVACY

The motion

That this House is deeply concerned by reports in the national press that a Google engineer was able illegally to access children's private email accounts and telephone records; welcomes Google's decision to terminate the engineer's employment; notes however, that Google only took action after parents and children complained that the engineer had illegally used Google data to harass four children, including a 15-year old boy; further notes that this is the second confirmed time that a Google employee has been condemned for such a breach of trust; and therefore calls for a comprehensive review into privacy law, which would establish tougher safeguards to protect internet privacy, to be administered by the Information Commissioner, and which would give individual citizens a more accessible right of redress.
