REZA SHAHABI (No. 2)

That this House notes that in response to his continuing illegal detention in Evin prison, Tehran, notorious for the use of torture against inmates, Reza Shahabi, Treasurer of the Tehran Bus Workers Union, has embarked on a dry hunger strike and is not taking liquids; is highly concerned at this state of affairs which arises directly from the refusal of the Iranian authorities to release Shahabi onpreviously agreedbail conditions; further notes Amnesty International'sbelief thatShahabi is very likely to be a prisoner of conscience and is being held solely on account of his trade union activities; and urges the Government to act urgently to bring all possible pressure to bear on the Iranian authorities immediately torelease Reza Shahabi.
