The motion

That this House recognises that anaerobic digestion is a renewable energy technology which should be exploited to the full in the UK given that, for example, a 50,000 tonne anaerobic digestion plant can produce up to 2.5 MW of electricity per year and that correctly sited plants could achieve high efficiencies if also utilising combined heat and power systems; notes that the UK produces, in addition to sewage and farm slurry, 8.3 million tonnes of food waste each year, much of which will be disposed of in landfill; and therefore agrees with major utilities like National Grid that increased investment in anaerobic digestion technology could make a significant contribution to UK domestic energy supplies.
