The motion
That this House recognises that the minimum requirements that make up the current universal postal service obligation on Royal Mail are an essential service for communities throughout the UK, and particularly in rural and deprived urban areas, and that as part of that obligation Royal Mail provides letter collection and delivery services to all 28 million addresses in the UK as well as specialist services for the blind; notes that the Postal Services Bill 2010 requires the new postal regulator Ofcom to review the minimum requirements that make up the universal service obligation within 18 months of the bill receiving Royal Assent; rejects the prospects that those minimum requirements may be reduced; and calls on the Government to ensure they are maintained at the current level for a period of not less than five years.
