UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS

The motion

That this House welcomes the efforts being made by the Government to improve standards in schools and raise the aspirations of pupils but would view with concern any attempt to put political pressure on universities to discriminate between applicants on the basis of their school, family income, background or any other factor unrelated to their academic merit; and believes that any such policy would be to the detriment of standards in universities and highly unlikely to lead to any improvement in standards in schools.
