The motion
That this House supports international efforts to agree a legally-binding Arms Trade Treaty at the UN in 2012; notes that the irresponsible and poorly-regulated trade in arms fuels conflict and serious human rights abuses in regions across the world and undermines development; recognises that the UK has been instrumental in driving the Arms Trade Treaty process forward; further notes that the two Preparatory Committees in February and July 2011 will be crucial moments for influencing the drafting of the treaty text; and calls on the Government to do all within its power to build international support for a strong treaty with comprehensive scope, broad parameters and robust implementation mechanisms.
