JOBS AT THE DAILY RECORD AND SUNDAY MAIL

Tabled by Baroness Clark of Kilwinning (Labour) 39 signatures

The motion

That this House is shocked at the news that up to 90 editorial jobs could be lost at the Scottish newspapers the Daily Record and Sunday Mail; notes that this amounts to almost half of all journalists employed on these two titles; further notes that the Mirror Group management plan to outsource the sub-editing of feature pages to the Press Association in Howden, Yorkshire, to merge the news and features department and to rely on the Daily Mirror in London for national, international and show business news; believes that such cuts and outsourcing will be devastating to the papers' Scottish identity and is destructive for the future of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail; furthernotes that Scotland's First Minister has described the Daily Record as`a hugely important institution in Scottish public life'; further notes that the Scottish Labour Leader has expressed `grave concerns about the impact on the quality of journalism at the papers'; and calls on Mirror Group management to reconsider these proposals and seek alternatives as suggested by the National Union of Journalists.
