NEW YORK CITY LARGE SODA BAN

The motion
That this House welcomes the decision by the New York Board of Health to ban extra large sweetened beverages to tackle the obesity epidemicwhich is a leading factor in causing type-2 diabetes; notes that this will mean any drink larger than 16 ounces and extra-large options of beverages that contain more than 25 calories per 8 ounces will be removed from menus; further notes that 14.5 billionlitres of soft drinks were consumed in 2010 in the UK and of those only 63 per cent of fizzy drinks were diet; is alarmed that the average person in the UK consumes 450 calories per day through non-alcoholic liquids; and calls on the Government to introduce legislation similarto New York in order to combat increasing obesity and type-2 diabetes.
