The motion
That this House is alarmed at a recent report by the Chief Medical Officer for England that suggests that deaths from liver disease amongunder 65s have risen by 20 per cent between 2000 and 2009 to reach 10,850 deaths a year; notes that the increase in liver disease is closely related to obesity and its associated condition of high blood pressure; further notes that there is a high increase in levels of obesity amongst children and young adults, a major factor of diabetes which affects an estimated 3.7 million in the UK, including 850,000 who have type 2 diabetes but do not yet know; and calls on the Department of Health to take urgent action to prevent diabetes and liver disease through a national campaign to raise awareness about the dangers posed by obesity.
